Veneer and marquetry

Veneer and marquetry and both made by gluing thinner layers of precious wood or other materials on the surface of an object made of less precious material. Veneer is plain, while marquetry is used to create a decorative image with the more precious wood or other materials, such as tortoise shell, ivory, metals or synthetic imitation materials.

Writing desk of the Empress Augusta

The inner fitting of the writing desk was curved maple veneer that had become loose from its base structure and had to be glued back in place. The desk was created for the residency of Empress at Schloss Babelsberg in Potsdam, Germany, where it is currently exhibited.
