Straw Marquetry

Straw marquetry is a technique practiced in Europe since the 17th century and was widely used in France and Germany to decorate mainly smaller objects. It consists of arranging straw in a decorative manner on the surface of an object. The straw may be dyed or used in its natural state.

Straw marquetry from Schillingsfürst

A portrait of the city of Schillingsfürst in Franken, Germany, early 20th century. It was delivered with a golden frame which was replaced with a modern protective frame and restored separately. Damaged straw and badly aged filling materials were replaced with newly dyed straw and all loose straw elements glued in place with methylcellulose glue.
